Cloud Computing is nothing new. In fact most of us have been using the “Cloud” for quite some time now. The Cloud is a metaphor for the Internet. So why is there such a rebirth of something that is already in place? For one thing, there are many new uses of the cloud which make it appealing for a broader audience.
Cloud computing has evolved from the ASP and most recently SaaS model of providing services to clients. For example, IaaS or Infrastructure as a Service is a huge cost savings use of the cloud for companies of all sizes. PaaS or Platform as a Service allows development companies to utilize a geographically centralized environment which can scale dynamically as needs change. DaaS or Desktop as a Service is quickly gaining adoption among corporations that wish to manage a centrally control desktop image which is served out to terminals around the world. Again, this is nothing new, but the availability, bandwidth and tools to effectively manage the smart terminals that consume these images are widely available and much more cost effective then in the past.
